Types

  1. Fibrous - 2 bones joined by fibrous tisue (skull sutures, interosseous membranes)
  2. Cartilaginous - 2 bones joined by hyaline cartilage
    • Primary: joined by hyaline cartilage (costochondrial)
    • Secondary: joined by hyaline cartilage and disc in between (all midline symphyses)
  3. Synovial
    • Atypical: articular surface covered with fibrocartilage (TMJ, sternoclavicular)
    • Typical: articular surface covered with hyaline cartilage

 

 

Types of movement in synovial joints

  1. Plane: tarsus, carpus
  2. Hinge: interphalangeal
  3. Modified hinge: knee
  4. Condyloid: metacarpophalangeal
  5. Saddle condyloid: 1st MCP
  6. Ball and socket: hip, shoulder, SCJ
  7. Pivot: radio-ulnar
